Women’s Basketball Season Comes to a Close for Lady Falcons, 59-47

March 5, 2010
Sometimes the ball bounces funny. Friday night, in San Antonio, the ball bounced off the rim on free throws and away from the Falcons on rebounds to leave UTPB on the short side of the scoreboard with a 59-47 season ending loss to St. Mary’s.

The Rattlers out rebounded the Falcons 39-18 while UTPB left 10 points on the free throw line shooting 12-of-22 for 54.5 percent.

The Falcons had a tough time getting into a rhythm in the early going as Tammy Acosta and Simone Jackson got into foul trouble early which limited their minutes in the game.

Despite the foul troubles, the Falcons stayed close until the closing moments when the Rattlers pulled away to advance in the Conference Tournament with a 59-47 win.

UTPB finishes the season with a 16-13 record.

Miesha Blackshear finished the game with nine points, four rebounds, five steals, a block and a steal. Acosta also had nine points with a rebound, three assists and two steals.

Women’s Basketball Advances to Heartland Conference Tournament Semifinal Game

March 4, 2010
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin wins in the opening round of the Heartland Conference Tournament in a shootout against Texas A&M International (TAMIU), 79-68.

Each team came out firing away at the basket, putting up a combined 24 points before the first media timeout.

As the game continued, the Falcons took control early as UTPB ran out to a 26-19 lead over the Dustdevils with 10:50 left in the half.

TAMIU would answer back and run the Falcons down as the Dustdevils cut the lead down to one point, 32-31, at the 6:41 mark of the first half.

The Falcons would extend the lead again, taking a nine point lead, 44-35, with 1:27 left before halftime. Again, TAMIU would respond by hitting a three at the buzzer to cut the Falcon advantage to only six heading into the break.

This theme continued in the second half. UTPB would extend its lead only to have TAMIU chop it back down.

The turning point of the game came at the 9:34 mark when a Dustdevil layup would cut the UTPB lead to one point at 62-61. From that point forward, the UTPB offense got hot while the defense turned up its intensity. UTPB went on a 14-2 run to extend its lead to 76-63 at the 3:43 mark. A free throw after a TAMIU technical foul gave UTPB its largest lead of the day at 14 points, 77-63, with 2:23 left in the game.

This time, the Dustdevils could not cut into the Falcons lead as UTPB advanced in the tournament with a 79-68 victory.

Junior guard Miesha Blackshear had a dominating performance in the opening round of the tournament. Blackshear had 17 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, four steals, and one block in the game. Women’s Basketball Wins at Lincoln 62-54

Feb. 25, 2010
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin win the first game of the final road series of the season with a 62-54 win over the Blue Tigers from Lincoln in Missouri Thursday night.

Lincoln was leading by 10 points with 4:21 left to play in the first half. However, the Falcons got hot and started to cut away the Blue Tiger’s advantage. Andrea Chavez hit a three pointer with 34 seconds left to play in the half to send her team to the locker room down only by a pair.

On UTPB’s first possession, Miecha Blackshear hit a lay up to tie the game 29-29; and after a Blue Tiger turnover, Callie Norris hit a three pointer to put the Falcons up 32-29 at the 19:26 mark.

The Falcon defense tightened up in the second half; and although Lincoln made some runs in the game, UTPB did not give up the lead for the rest of the game as the Falcons rolled to a 62-54 victory. UTPB improves to 14-12 (8-5).

The Falcons were lead by junior Chavez who had 18 points, three rebounds and a steal. Just behind her was Norris with 17 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Blackshear finished the game with 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.

As a team, UTPB shot 37.9 percent from the floor going 22-of-58 for the game. The Falcons hit 8-of-20 three pointers and made 10-of-14 from the free throw line.

Women’s Basketball downs St. Edward’s in Austin, 68-61

Feb. 20, 2010
After a neck and neck first half the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Falcons took control in the second half to defeat the Hilltoppers from St. Edward’s 68-61 to improve to 13-12 (7-5).

UTPB took a 32-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. An unassuming layup by Miesha Blackshear at the 12:47 mark, to give the Falcons a 41-40 lead, would end up being the basket that took the lead away from the Hilltoppers for good. St. Edward’s would make a couple of small runs to try to retake the lead, but could never overtake the Falcons, who lead by as many as 10 in the second half.

The Falcons were lead by Blackshear who had 17 points, six rebounds with four steals. UTPB Women’s Basketball Clinch a Playoff Spot with 58-55 Win over A&M International

Feb. 18, 2010
It was a “must win” night for a lot of reasons, but most importantly, a win would put the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in the post season tournament. It was a close game in the end, but the Falcons held off the Dustdevils to secure a 58-55 win and a post season playoff spot.

This is the Falcon’s first visit to the post season since UTPB joined the Heartland Conference and the NCAA. Women’s basketball’s last post season appearance was in 2006 when the Falcons missed the NAIA National Tournament with a lost in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.

The 58-55 win gives improves UTPB record to 6-5. With only two conference games left in the season Newman 3-9 and A&M International 3-9 will not be able to catch UTPB.

The Falcons went into the locker room down 33-29 at half, but came out swinging in the second half. The Falcons tied the game at 35-35 on two Miesha Blackshear free throws. TAMIU retook the lead for a moment, but two back-to-back three pointers from Lauren Unger put UTPB back on top 41-37. UTPB would extend the lead to seven points 44-37 with 10:10 left to play in the game.

The Dustdevils would rally back and catch UTPB at the 7:33 mark to tie the game at 44-44 then retake the lead with a couple of jump shots to go up 48-45 with 6:52 left to play. The game stayed close as the clock rolled past the three minute mark. Unger hit a jumper to tie the game at 51-51 with 2:40 left to play. The Dustdevils took a two point lead on a jump shot just before Unger hit a three pointer to give UTPB the 54-53 lead with 1:34 left to play.

After two Blackshear freethrows, TAMIU hit a jumper to make it a one point game at 56-55 with just under a minute to play.

The Falcons banged home two more free throws by Tammy Acosta to go up three, 58-55 with 19 seconds left. The Dustdevils final shot would not find it mark as UTPB snaps a four game skid and locks up a spot in the post season tournament.

Blackshear had a big game with 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double and added two assists and five steals. Callis Norris was the top scorer for the Falcons with 15 points, five rebounds with an assist and a steal. Unger hit some key threes in the game to finish with 14 points, a round and a steal.

At halftime, Incarnate Word looked as if they were going to run away with the game as they went into the locker room up 49-30.

However, the Falcons showed that they were a tough out. UIW went up 23 points at the 15:13 mark of the second half before the Falcons started running down the Cardinals lead by sophomore guard Tammy Acosta who had 20 of her 22 points in the second half. Poor Shooting Snaps Falcon’s Win Streak with a 71-60 Loss in Oklahoma

Jan. 31, 2010
The unfriendly confines of the Oklahoma Panhandle State gym extended to not only the fans, but the rim for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin women’s basketball team. The Falcons lost 71-60 behind a 22-71 performance from the floor for the night.

UTPB, who was down 31-27 at half, chased The Aggies for most of the game. However, every time it looked as if the Falcon were going to catch the Panhandle, the Aggies would go on a run to extend the lead.

UTPB  shot 9-of-38, 23.7 percent in the first half (3-13 from the three-point-line and 6-6 from the free throw line). In the second half the Falcons improved to 13-of-33 for 39.4 percent (0-5 from the three-point-line and 7-10 from the free throw line).

After the first four minutes of the second half, UTPB pushed their lead to 50-34 and it looked as if the host would cruise to victory.  However, the Lady Blue Tigers were not going to go away easy.  Trailing 62-52 with 7:43 to play, the visitors went on a 12-1 run to take a 64-63 lead with three minutes to play.  But the Lady Falcons, behind the fearless play of Tammy Acosta, would respond and pick up the important conference victory.
