The men’s soccer team traveled to Austin, TX Sunday afternoon (11/1/09) to face St. Edwards just 48 hours after a big victory at Incarnate Word. Unfortunately, the Falcons could not make it two straight as they fell to the Hilltoppers, 2-0. The loss drops the Falcons to 4-11-1 overall and 2-7 in Heartland Conference action. St. Edwards improves to 7-7-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
After a scoreless first half of play, St. Edwards struck quickly to open the second half. Joeski Williams scored from straight on at about 10 yards out to put the Hilltoppers up 1-0 just under five minutes into the final stanza. Then, at the 62:36 mark of the contest, the Hilltoppers would add to their lead when Josh Nannen scored on a penalty kick. That would provide the final margin of 2-0 for the host.
Statistically, the Falcons were dominated in shot attempts as St. Edwards posted 20 tries to just five for St. Edwards. UTPB did not have one shot attempt in the entire second half. Additionally, the Falcons were tagged with four yellow cards and a red card in the contest.
UTPB will play host to Newman University on Sunday, November 8, 2009. The game, which is scheduled for 3:00pm, will be the final men’s soccer game of the 2009 season.

The UTPB men’s soccer team pulled off an upset on Friday evening by defeating host Incarnate Word University, 1-0. The victory for the Falcons avenged a heart breaking loss just under three weeks ago to ICU that saw UTPB fall 4-3 in overtime after leading late in regulation.
The win moves the Falcons to 4-10-1 overall and 2-6-0 in Heartland Conference play.
The Cardinals fall to 6-7-3 overall and 4-3-0 in Heartland Conference action.
After a scoreless first half, the Falcons’ Ulises Guillen ran up the middle and beat the Cardinals’ goalie to give UTPB the only goal for either team in the contest. The goal came less than one minute into the second half. UTPB would manage to hold on down the stretch to gain the 1-0 victory.
In shot attempts, the Falcons were dominated in the contest. ICU blasted the Falcons, 19-2. However the one category that matters most, shots made, was won by the Falcons, 1-0.

The UTPB men’s soccer team fell on Sunday afternoon (10/25/09) to St. Mary’s, 3-0. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 3-10-1 overall and 1-6-0 in Heartland Conference play while St. Mary’s improves to 5-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference action.
After a scoreless and competitive first half, things began to unravel from the outset of the second half for the Falcons. Less than three minutes into the second half, Robson Pritchett scored off a header on a free kick by Aaron Strother to put the visitors on the board at 1-0. Stephen Gamez then made it 2-0 for St. Mary’s at the 68:48 mark on a one-timer off a goal kick.
St. Mary’s Luis Gonzalez would add a final goal for St. Mary’s with about 30 seconds left when he put back a rebound off a missed shot attempt.
St. Mary’s second half domination led to an astounding 19-5 lead in shot attempts in the contest.
The Falcons will travel to Incarnate Word on Friday, October 30, 2009. Game time is set for 6:00pm in San Antonio.

The UTPB men’s soccer team fell on Wednesday afternoon to Truman State, 6-1. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 3-9-1 overall while Truman State improves to 11-2-1 in conference action.
Bobby Larkin got the Bulldogs on the board at the 34:21 mark of the first half. Matt Taylor would putback a rebounded miss just before intermission to make it 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, things remained at 2-0 for the first 23 minutes of the second half. Then, Ben Green got hot for the host Bulldogs as he scored back to back goals in a span of 59 seconds to put Truman State up 4-0. Two minutes later, Matthew Sanderson added a goal to put the Bulldogs up 5-0.
The Falcons finally got on the board at the 72-minute mark when Barrett Yates scored his first goal of the season. Charlie Backus would add the game’s final goal for the Bulldogs to provide the final margin of 6-1.
Truman State dominated in the contest as they outshot the Falcons, 29-6. UTPB was only able to get two shot attempts on goal during the entire match.
The Falcons will host St. Mary’s on Sunday, October 25, 2009. Game time is set for 4:00pm.

The men’s soccer team at UTPB snapped a seven-game losing streak on Monday afternoon at Newman University (Kan) by a score of 1-0. The win brings the Falcons to 3-8-1 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Newman drops to 2-9-2 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
In a game that was very evenly played across the board statistically, the Falcons only goal would prove to be enough for the win. After a scoreless first half of play, the Falcons would score the only goal of the contest by either team at the 63 minute mark when Isaias Miramontes’ 25-yarder from the right side crossed all the way over to the left corner of the goal.
UTPB will travel to Kirksville, MO on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 to play Truman State University. Game time is set for 1pm.

The men’s soccer team at UTPB dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Incarnate Word on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Falcons to 2-7-1 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Incarnate Word improved to 4-3-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Incarnate Word took a 1-0 lead just 11 minutes into the contest when Troy Thompson scored from the right side. Then, UTPB’s Raul Lopez took over for the Falcons. Lopez, who scored all three of the Falcons’ goals on the day, scored his first at the 25 minute mark from 15 yards out as he dribbled into the box and found the back of the net.
Lopez then scored his second goal of the day at the 36:11 mark of the opening half. His shot from outside the box bounced off the goalie’s hands and found the back of the net, thus giving the Falcons a 2-1 advantage at intermission.
Lopez scored both his and UTPB’s final goal of the day at the 56:25 mark. The goal gave UTPB a 3-1 advantage.
Unfortunately, Incarnate Word was not finished. Michael Terrell scored at the 68-minute mark to trim the Falcon lead to 3-2. It looked as if the Falcons would hold off the host as UTPB held to their 3-2 advantage down the stretch. However, IC’s Jonathan Barabin scored on a one-timer from 15 yards out with just under two minutes in regulation to tie the score at 3-3 and send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, Troy Thompson scored his second goal of the day for Incarnate Word off a corner kick about seven minutes into the overtime period. The goal gave the host a 4-3 come-from-behind victory.
Incarnate Word outshot UTPB 19-8 in the contest and the Falcons were called for 22 fouls to just 14 against Incarnate Word. Both teams received two yellow cards.
UTPB will travel to Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 for a 4pm kick off.

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin Falcon soccer team lost to conference foe St. Edward’s 2-0 in Odessa Friday afternoon.
St. Edward’s scored one goal at the 44:51 mark of the first half after the keeper fell to leave the net open. The second goal came at the 46:41 mark in the second half after a UTPB foul set up a penalty kick for the ‘Toppers.
James Carr and Brandon Pepper each had two shots with one shot on goal each. Farid Sapien and Collin Greene each had one shot on goal as well. Chris Benavides finished with two saves and two goals for the match.
The UTPB men will be back in action at 4 pm in Odessa on Sunday, Oct. 11 against Incarnate Word.

The UTPB men’s soccer team fell on Tuesday afternoon (9/29/09) in San Antonio to St. Mary’s University, 2-0. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 2-4-1 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play. St. Mary’s improves to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference action.
In what would be a hot tempered and physical game, both sides battled evenly throughout the first half until the final seconds. Stephen Gamez scored on a header off a throw in with seven seconds to play in the opening stanza to give St. Mary’s a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Falcons surely did not help themselves in the opening stanza as they tallied three yellow cards and two red cards in the half.
In the second half while still trailing only 1-0, the Falcons got their second red card of the afternoon as the 80th minute of regulation approached. Just minutes later, the Rattlers finished off the Falcons when Daniel Kelly found the back of the net for the hosts second goal of the day.
In the contest, both teams were called for 21 fouls each. In addition, the Falcons collected three yellow cards and three red cards. The Rattlers received two yellow cards. Finally, the Rattlers had double the shot attempts of the Falcons, 10-5.
The Falcons will host St. Edward’s on Friday, October 9, 2009. Game time is set for 2:00pm.

The UTPB Falcon men’s soccer team dropped their Heartland Conference opener on Sunday afternoon in Laredo to Texas A&M International University by a score of 2-0. With the loss, the Falcons drop to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. Texas A&M International University improves to 2-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play.
Texas A&M International got on the board just 13 minutes into the contest when Alex De La Fuente scored his first goal of the season. De La Fuente punched it in from 10 yards out off of an assist by Giovanni Galindo. The goal would provide the only scoring in the first half as the host led 1-0 at intermission.
The score would remain at 1-0 until the final two minutes of action. Roy Brown would score off an assist by Theo Brown to seal the deal for the host Dustdevils as they would go on to win 2-0.
In the contest, the Dustdevils outshot the Falcons 18 to seven. The Falcons were only able to get off two shot attempts in the final half of play.
The Falcons will have a week to prepare for the rematch as Texas A&M International University will travel to Odessa on Sunday, September 27, 2009. Game time is set for 2:00pm.
The West Texas A&M University men’s soccer team proved to be too much for the UTPB men’s team as they blitzed the Falcons, 7-1. On the season, the Falcons now stand at 2-2-1 while West Texas A&M moves to 4-1.
West Texas A&M was relentless from the start as they scored their first goal at the 12:21 mark of the contest and would go on to add three more goals in the opening half of play to take a 4-0 lead.
The second half would see West Texas A&M stretch their lead to 6-0. The Falcons would get their only goal of the day with just under eight minutes to play in the contest when Ulises Guillen scored from four yards out. West Texas A&M would add a goal with under two minutes to go to make the final margin 7-1.
The Falcons will try to regroup as they will travel on Sunday, September 20, 2009 to Laredo to face off with Texas A&M International. Game time is set for 5:00pm.
Sept. 1, 2009 - The UTPB men’s soccer team posted its first win of the 2009-10 season this afternoon with a 2-0 victory over visiting the Eastern New Mexico University. With the win, the Falcons move to 1-2 on the season.
The Falcons scored their first goal just over 24 minutes into the contest when Marcelo Andres scored on a put back following an attempted goal and save by ENMU. The goal gave UTPB a 1-0 lead at intermission.
Shelby Sharp posted the Falcons second goal just over 65 minutes into the contest when he scored on a breakaway goal.
The Falcon men will return to action on Saturday, September 5, 2009 when they travel to Abilene to play Hardin Simmons University. Game time is set for 4:00pm.
West Texas A&M got their first goal when the Falcons’ Manuel Montes kicked the ball in trying to clear it with just under 19 minutes remaining in the first half. The goal would be the only points of the first half, as the Buffs held a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, West Texas A&M would strike just minutes into the action when Ben Everson scored on an assist by Victor Olivares’ throw into the box. That would give the Buffs a 2-0 advantage, which would go on to provide the final margin of victory for the visitors.
In the contest, the Falcons were penalized with two yellow cards, while the Buffs were also tagged with one penalty. The Falcons also trailed in shot attempts for the game as they had 11 in comparison to 19 for the Buffs.
The Falcons, who have yet to score after two games this season, will return to action on Tuesday, September 1, when they play host to Eastern New Mexico University. Game time is set for 3:00pm.
