The 2009-10 season will begin a new era for the UTPB men’s basketball program as Dwaine Osborne takes control for the Falcons.  Osborne brings 13 years of collegiate coaching experience with him to Odessa, with four coming as a head coach and nine years total as an assistant coach. Osborne, who was hired in May 2009, comes to the UTPB after turning around the basketball program at Glenville State College (WV).

Osborne, who took over the Glenville State program at 29 years of age, became the second youngest NCAA II head coach in the country at the time of his hiring. In addition, he was one of the five youngest head coaches at any level in the NCAA.

When Osborne took over in June of 2005, he was determined to take the program to unseen heights.  Four years later, the 2008-09 season brought about what Osborne desired from the outset.  The Pioneers posted a 20-9 record overall, giving the program its first 20-win season as a NCAA II member.  Additionally, it was the program’s first 20-win season in 16 years and only its second in the last 36 years, dating back to 1973.  The Pioneers defeated #11 nationally ranked Alderson-Broaddus, the fourth time under Osborne that the Pioneers would knock off a Top 20 nationally ranked opponent.

Further, the Pioneers posted a 13-7 league mark, good for the program’s second Top 5 finish in the 16-team WVIAC under Osborne during his four seasons.  The 13 victories and fifth place finishes matched the highest in both categories for the program since moving to the NCAA II level.  Additionally, the Pioneers broke school records for three-point shots made in a season (269) for the third consecutive season.  They also established new all-time school marks for three-point shots made in a game (21) and three-point shots made in a half (14).

The Pioneers also continued to be an offensive force under Osborne.  The 2008-09 Pioneers finished in the Top 20 nationally in scoring offense for the second time under Osborne by posting 84.1 points per game.  The Pioneers also finished in the Top 20 nationally in three-point field goal percentage (5th), in three-point field goals per game (11th), and in free throw percentage (18th).

Individual awards came to the Pioneers as a by-product of the 2008-09 team’s success.  Senior Tryvan Leech was named to the WVIAC All-Conference first team as he finished in the Top 5 nationally in three-point shots made per game (2nd), as well as three-point shooting percentage (4th).  Leech also became the school’s 29th member of the 1,000 point club. Senior Anthony Kimble and junior Jamal Holden were both named to the WVIAC Honorable Mention All-Conference team.  Finally, senior Chase Groves ended his four-year career 15th all-time in school history in scoring with 1,520 points.

In his inaugural season at the helm of the program, the Pioneers made major strides as Osborne began rebuilding the program.  During that 2005-06 season, Osborne led the Pioneers to a 14-15 overall record and a 12-6 record in the WVIAC.  Both the 14 overall wins and the 12 conference wins were the second highest totals for the program since it moved to the NCAA II level in the early 90's.

The Pioneers also defeated three NCAA II Top 20 nationally ranked teams, established an eight-game win streak (longest since the 1992-93 season), ended the season with two NCAA II national 2005-06 season records, and finished the season with a seven-game home court win streak. Finally, the Pioneers led the WVIAC in three-point at 42.0% per game. For the season, they converted 38.9% of their three-point attempts, which allowed them to finish ranked in the Top 30 nationally in the category.

One of Osborne’s first recruits as a head coach was Raymond McKeithan, who was named to the WVIAC All-Conference first team, the All-East Region second team, and finished eighth nationally in scoring.  Further, Osborne recruited and coached Chase Groves, who finished as runner up for WVIAC Freshman of the Year and was named to the WVIAC All-Freshman team during the 2005-06 season.

In all, Osborne’s four years at the helm saw nine school records broken, five Top 20 finishes in various statistical categories, and four victories against NCAA II nationally ranked opponents.  Osborne also recruited and coached two of the five best career three-point shooters in Glenville State College history.  During his four seasons as head coach for the Pioneers, eight players were recognized by the WVIAC with postseason honors.

Prior to becoming the head coach in Glenville, Osborne spent three seasons as an assistant at Glenville State. In his seven total years as an assistant and head coach at Glenville State, Osborne recruited and signed 20 players who went on to average double figures in scoring in respective seasons.  Nine of those players have gone on to be named to the WVIAC All-Conference teams and/or the NCAA II All-East Region teams.  Finally, as a GSC assistant, he helped lead the first men's basketball team at Glenville State College to a #9 NCAA II Regional Ranking in January, 2005.

Prior to his arrival at Glenville State, Osborne served as an assistant coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian College (NC).  While at St. Andrews, Osborne helped lead the team to its first ever Conference Tournament Championship in 1999-2000, as well as their first ever berth in the NCAA II tournament.

Osborne began his college coaching career as an assistant coach at Clearwater Christian College (FL).  During his three years at Clearwater Christian, Osborne helped lead the team to a 56-27 overall record, three consecutive conference championships, and three appearances in regional tournament championship games.  Additionally, he coached four players who went on to become NCCAA II All-Americans and one player who was named as the NCCAA II National Player of the Year.

In all, Osborne has coached 10 players who have gone on to play basketball professionally. One of those players, Justin Rowe, played for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns during the 2004-05 season. Other former players under Osborne who have signed professional contracts include Jonathan Burge, Justice Graham, Andrew Harding, Thomas Hawkins, Kenyon Jones, Darius Howard, Tyrone McCann, Raymond McKeithan, and Anthony McKinnonhttp://www.gscpioneers.com/profile.cfm?id=104424.

Osborne, 33, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from Clearwater Christian College in Clearwater, FL.  He also holds a Master's Degree in Communications, in which he earned a 4.0 GPA, from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV.
