Falcons Fall On Road To Angelo State, 48-40

Nov. 17, 2009
The UTPB men’s basketball team fell on the road to Angelo State Tuesday evening in a defensive battle, 48-40.  The contest served as the season opener for both teams.  The Falcons now stand at 0-1 overall.

The Falcons jumped out to a 6-2 early lead three minutes into the contest.  Angelo State’s Rams responded with a 14-3 run over the next eight minutes to take a 16-9 lead, their largest of the opening half.  The Falcons would return the favor as they bounced back with a 14-3 run of their own over the final 8:33 of the first half. The spurt gave the Falcons a 23-19 lead at intermission.

A slow start to the second half hurt the Falcons early as multiple turnovers led to only four points in the opening eight minutes.  In that time, the Rams would build their lead to as many as six points at 33-27 with 12:33 to play.  The Falcons would then use stifling defense to make a 4-0 run over the next 6:33 to cut their deficit to two points at 33-31 with six minutes to play.  The Rams were held scoreless for nearly seven minutes in the stretch.

From the six minute mark on, the Rams very slowly and methodically stretched their lead to four points at the three-minute mark, and up to as many as 10 points at 46-36 with 51 seconds to play.  The 10-point lead would be the first double digit lead of the game for either team and Angelo State would eventually settle for a 48-40 victory over the Falcons.

As a team, the Falcons defense was more than good enough as they held the Rams to just 29% shooting in the contest, including only 17% from the three-point line.  However, the Falcons converted just 35% of their field goal attempts and were outrebounded 41-29.  UTPB also committed 23 turnovers in the contest.  Additionally, the Falcons attempted only 16 free throws, in comparison to 30 by the home-standing Rams.  Four Falcons fouled out of the contest, while no Rams fouled out.

Sophomore Elijah Jordan led UTPB in scoring with 11 points on four of nine shooting.  He was the lone double-digit scorer in the contest.  Senior Charles Harper led the way in rebounding with seven overall.

The Falcons will next play on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 when they travel to face the University of Texas – Arlington, a member of NCAA I.  Game time is set for 7:00pm.
