It was a back-and-fourth game until the eighth inning when Newman took a one run lead to defeat The University of Texas of the Permian Basin 4-3 in Wichita, Kan. Sunday afternoon.
Evan Gattis had two hits and an RBI while Jeremy Miller had two hits with a run for the Falcons. Chris Wagner had two runs on no hits.
Mario Urena fell to 3-4 going the distance for the Falcons. Urena had five strikeouts and a walk while allowing four runs (all earned) on nine hits.
UTPB’s games against Eastern New Mexico have been cancelled so the next games for the Falcons will be Friday and Saturday against Texas A&M International. Please check the UTPB website for the latest updates on game times and days.

Both The University of Texas of the Permian Basin Falcons and the Newman Jet had a come from behind win on Saturday afternoon in Wichita, Kan. UTPB had a 6-3 extra inning victory in game one, while the Jets rallied in the sixth inning to win game two 8-5.
Game One
The score was deadlocked at 0-0 until the Falcons finally got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Jets took the lead in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Heading into the last inning of the game Newman was up 2-1. UTPB scored again in the top of the seventh and held off Newman to extend the game into extra innings tied 2-2.
UTPB took a commanding 6-2 lead with four runs on the top of the eighth. The Falcons only allowed one run in the bottom of the inning to hold off Newman and seal up a 6-3 game one win.
Jeremy Miller and Garret Wolff each had a hit, a run and an RBI for the Falcons.
On the mound, Felix Cardenas went six innings on his way to a no decision. Cardenas had 11 strikeouts, no walks while allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits. Drew Kendrick picked up a win in a relief appearance. Kendrick went two complete with two strikeouts and two walks allowing no hits and one run (earned).
Game Two
UTPB got off to a fast start in game two going up 4-0 in the first three innings. However, Newman rallied back in the fourth with three runs of their own to cut into the UTPB lead 4-3. The Falcons added a run in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-3, but it wouldn’t be enough. Newman poured on five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead of the Falcons 8-5. UTPB would not be able to get anything going in the seventh as the Jets would go on to win game two 8-5.
Travis Wilcox had one run on two hits with two RBIs while Wolff had a pair of hits in the game.
Connor Lewis went three and two thirds on his way to a no decision. Lewis had one strike out while allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits. Jordan Strode went one and a third allowing two runs (both earned) on one hit with one strikeout and a walk. Chace Lankford picked up the loss for the Falcons pitching one inning. Lankford had two strikeouts and two walks giving up three runs (all earned) on three hits.
UTPB and Newman will play two more games starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday March 14 in Wichita, Kan.

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball split a pair of games with the Cardinals from Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon in Odessa. UTPB won the first game 7-0 only to lose the second 6-3 to split the day 1-1 and lose the series 3-1.
Game One
The Falcons got to work early against UIW in the open game of the day. UTPB picked up a run in the first and second innings before pouring on four runs in the fourth inning to go well ahead of Word 6-0.
The Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, but it was not needed thanks to starting pitcher Felix Cardenas’ commanding performance in the game three start on his way to his fifth win of the year. UTPB went on to win game one of the day 7-0.
Against the best hitting team in the conference, Cardenas allowed no runs on six hits with six strikeouts and no walks in the complete game shutout.
Top performers on the offensive side where Chris Wagner with two hits and two RBIs. Jeremy Miller had two hits, including a double, and one RBI while Travis Wilcox and Gordy LaHann each had two runs and a hit apiece.
As a team, UTPB scored seven runs on nine hits with two doubles. The Falcons had four strikeouts and four walks. The Falcons left seven runners on base while committing no errors and stealing one base.
Game Two
For five innings it looked as if UTPB would be able to even up the weekend series at two games each. However, Word made a big push in the last two innings to catch the Falcons in the sixth and take the lead in the seventh to hand UTPB a 6-3 loss.
UTPB, again, was getting it done with pitching. Chace Lankford, who has seen a lot of work as the UTPB closer, got his first start as a Falcon in game four. Lankford went five complete allowing five hits and no runs with three strikeouts while giving up only one walk on his way to a no decision. Drew Kendrick picked up the loss in a relief effort going to drop to 1-2 for the season. Kendrick pitched two innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
The Falcon hitters jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but could not put up anymore runs on the board.
Evan Gattis had a homerun while Carson Grizzard had two RBIs off a double all in the first inning. As a team, UTPB had three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks. UTPB had a double and a homerun with a stolen base while leaving seven runners stranded and committing two errors in the game.
The Falcons will look to get back on track this weekend as they take their show on the road for three games against Newman in Wichita, KS. Day one of the series will be a seven inning game followed by a nine inning game starting at 2 pm Saturday, March 13. Day two of the series will be one, nine inning game starting at 1 pm on Sunday, March 14. After wrapping up the Newman series, UTPB will drive down to Portales, NM for a two day series against Eastern New Mexico. The first day will be a nine inning game starting at 4 pm on Monday, March 15. Day two will also be a nine inning game starting at 1 pm on Tuesday, March 14.

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin dropped two in a row for the first time this season against the University of the Incarnate Word 4-1 and 8-5.
Game One
The Cardinals from Incarnate Word only had five hits in the game, but managed to turn those hits into four runs. UWI picked up a run in the second and third inning. UTPB cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth, but the Cardinals would take it back and add another in the fifth inning to pull ahead 4-1. UTPB looked as if they would get something rolling in the seventh inning, but ended up leaving the bases loaded to end the game with a 4-1 loss.
Gordy LaHann picked up two hits for the Falcons while Travis Wilcox had the teams only RBI as he scored Jeremy Miller off a double in the fourth.
As a team, UTPB had one run on six hits with one RBI. The Falcons had three walks, seven strikeouts and left six runners left on base while committing three errors in the field.

Game Two
UIW wasted no time running out a big lead in game two. UTPB picked up a run in the first inning only have the Cardinals score six in the top of the second inning of the game. The Falcons would add another run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 6-2. Word would pick up a run in the third and fourth inning to pad its lead to 8-2. UTPB tried to get a rally going with a run in the fifth and two in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Falcons just could not close the gap as they fall to Word 8-5.
Evan Gattis pick up two hits and two runs for the Falcons to lead all UTPB hitters. Austin Wooldridge had two hits and a RBI while Garrett Wolff had two hits and a run with an RBI.
The Falcon hitters had five runs on 12 hits with four walks and four strikeouts while stranding 12 runners on base and committing no errors.
Mario Urena drops to 3-3 on the season going two innings on his way to a loss. Urena allowed six runs (one earned) on five hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. Matt Ortiz picked up two innings allowing two runs (all earned) on four hits with three walks and a strikeout. Elliot Gleason went two innings giving up a hit and a walk. Juan Villarreal finished off the game going one inning with a strikeout.

Pitching and batting came together for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Sunday afternoon to help the Falcons pick up their first sweep of the season with the 5-0 and 6-2 wins over the Lincoln Blue Tigers.
Game One
The Falcons got off to a quick start putting a pair of runs on the board to take the early 2-0 lead. UTPB would tack on a couple of insurance runs in the sixth inning, but they would not need them, thanks to outstanding outing by starting pitcher, Felix Cardenas.
Cardenas went five and a third, striking out 11 and didn't give up a hit until the fourth inning on his way to his fourth win of the year. The junior allowed four hits and no runs while giving up only two walks. Drew Kendrick finished the game and picked up his first save of the season going one and two thirds while giving up no hit or runs and retired four batters with no strikeouts and no walks.
Jeremy Miller was the top hitter in game one going 4-for-4 with a triple and a walk. Evan Gattis had two runs on three hits with a stolen base; Austin Wooldridge had two runs on one hit with a walk and Ryan Giacomini had three RBIs off a triple with one walk.
As a team, UTPB had five runs on 11 hits with five RBIs. The Falcons racked up two triples, six doubles and three stolen bases while striking out four times, walking six and leaving 12 runners on base and committing one error in the field.
Game Two
UTPB again got out to a quick start as they peppered runs throughout the game. The Falcons scored two in the first inning, one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth while only giving up one run in the fourth and one in the sixth to roll to a 6-2 win and lock up the series sweep over the Blue Tigers.
Centerfielder Chandler Goode scored three runs and stole two bases without getting a hit in the game. Gattis picked up a RBI on two hits and Giacomini picked two RBIs (a sacrifice fly and a walk) without a hit.
Casey Rana got his first start of the season and his second win going four innings with two strike outs and two walks while allowing one run (unearned) on two hits. Jordan Strode picked up an inning of relief work allowing one hit, but no runs with no strikeouts and no walks. Chris Wagner closed the game going two complete striking out three with no walks, while allowing one run (earned) on one hit.
As a team UTPB scored six runs on four hits and picked up five RBIs. The Falcons drew 10 walks and stole three bases while striking out five times and leaving 11 runs on base and committing no errors in the field.
The sweep improves the Falcon’s record to 14-4 (14-4) on the season.
UTPB will host a 14-2 Incarnate Word on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6 for a four game series. All games will start at noon and will be played in Odessa at Roden Field.

After a dramatic come-from-behind 4-3 game one win, the University of Texas of the Permian Basin jumped on the Lincoln Blue Tigers 8-2 to win both games Saturday afternoon at Roden Field in Odessa to improve to 12-4 (12-4).
Game One
Lincoln jumped out to an early two point lead with runs in the second and third innings. UTPB cut into the Blue Tiger’s advantage with a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead in half 2-1.
Each team added a run in the sixth inning to head into the last inning with Lincoln in front 3-2.
After shutting down the Blue Tigers in the top of the seventh inning, UTPB’s Travis Wilcox came off the bench for a two RBI pinch hit single to win the game.
Connor Lewis went five and two thirds for a no decision start. Lewis had one strikeout and two walks while allowing nine hits and three runs (all earned). Drew Kendrick picked up the win going one and a third to improve to 1-1 on the season. Kendrick racked up two strikeouts while allowing no runs, hits or walks.
Chris Hook led all Falcons with two hits and a run; while Wilcox had a hit and two RBIs including the game winner. Chandler Goode added a run, hit and RBI off a homerun.
As a team, UTPB had six hits, four runs, four RBIs, a homerun with three strikeouts and three walks while committing no errors in the field and leaving three runners on base.
Game Two
UTPB got off to a fast start in game two, picking up two runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0. Lincoln answered back in the top of the second inning scoring two runs before UTPB retook the lead with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to pull ahead 4-2.
The Falcons continued to stay hot, picking up three more runs in the third inning to increase their lead to 7-2 after the first three innings. UTPB picked up an insurance run in the fifth to finishing off the Blue Tigers with an 8-2 win.
Brantley Miller had a hot bat for the Falcons picking up three runs off three hits in the game. Evan Gattis had a run and hit while picking up two RBIs. Hook and Wilcox each had a pair of RBIs off one hit apiece.
Mario Urena improved to 3-2, going six complete while allowing no walks and striking out three. Urean gave up two runs (both earned) on seven hits in the game. Elliot Gleason made his first appearance of the season picking up a strikeout while allowing no runs, hits or walks.
UTPB hitters rounded up eight runs on nine hits with eight RBIs. The Falcons had two strikeouts and walked five times; leaving 11 batters stranded and committed one error in the field.
UTPB will wraps up their series with Lincoln with two games on Sunday starting at noon.

The Falcons bullpen has been great this season lead by UTPB’s new closer Lankford. The sophomore from Forney had saves four and five this week against St. Edward’s while maintain a 0.00 era and allowed one hit (first of the season) with five strikeouts this year (12 on the year).

Saturday afternoon’s game between the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and St. Edward’s looked like it would a pitcher’s duel until each team started knocking the ball around in the later innings. However, it was UTPB who would end on top to win the series 2-1 and the game 8-6.
The game was deadlocked at 0-0 until the fourth inning when a pair of errors and some solid hitting helped the Falcons put a four spot on the board to go ahead 4-0.
St. Edward’s would get rolling in the hitting department as well, cutting the Falcon lead down with three runs in the sixth inning make the score 4-3 before tying up game with a run in the seventh 4-4.
UTPB picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead 5-4. Then, in the eighth, with two outs and runners on first and third, an early steal attempt forced a balk by the St. Edward’s pitcher to score UTPB’s insurance run and put the Falcons up 6-4.
Falcon pitchers locked down the Hilltoppers in the final innings to secure the 6-4 win and improve to 10-4 on the season.
Kevin Enkelmann picked up two runs on a hit with an RBI for the Falcons, while Chandler Goode had a hit, a run and an RBI.

UTPB will continue their home stand with a four game series against Lincoln starting on Friday, Feb. 26 – Saturday, Feb. 27. First pitch on Friday and Saturday is scheduled for noon on each day and all four games will be seven innings.

A pair of hard fought games at Roden Field Saturday afternoon left each team with a win and a loss as St. Edward’s would take game one on a late rally to win 6-4, and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin would return the favor in game two with a big rally of their own to take game two 8-6.
Game One
Both starting pitcher were in control in the first game. UTPB picked up two runs in the third and fifth innings to go up 4-0. However, the Hilltoppers picked up four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. After UTPB was not able to score a run in the bottom of the sixth St. Edward’s pulled ahead with two more runs in the seventh inning to win the game 6-4.
Evan Gattis lead all Falcon hitters with two hits (both doubles) with an RBI. Although he never drew a hit, Chandler Goode scored two runs for the Falcons.
Falcon hitters combined for four runs, on four hits with four RBIs while striking out eight times and drawing six walks. UTPB left four runners stranded and committed three errors in the field.

Game Two
In what started out as a low scoring close game, really opened up after a pair of errors helped UTPB put up five runs in the fifth secure an 8-6 win over the Hilltoppers.
UTPB rolled into the fourth inning up 2-1 with two outs when a bobble on two plays by the third basemen extended the inning. The Falcon took advantage to pour on five runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
The Falcon pitchers got into a little trouble in the eighth inning giving up four runs to the Hilltoppers as St. Edward’s cut the led to 8-6.
However, closer Chace Lankford shut down St. Edward’s to pick up his fourth save of the season as the Falcons defeat the ’Toppers 8-6.
Carson Grizzard was the top hitter for the Falcons with four hits, a run with two RBIs. Chris Hook was just behind him with three hits (one double) and two runs with an RBI. Chris Wagner (one double) and Austin Wooldridge each had two hits, a run and an RBI.
Starting pitcher Mario Urena had solid outing to improve to 2-2 on the season. Urena had seven strikeouts with only one walk allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in seven and two-thirds pitched. Ryan Merrell went zero innings allowing one run (earned) on two hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Lankford picked up his fourth save of the year going one and a third facing four batters and picking up two strikeouts.
Falcon hitters combined for eight runs on 12 hits with six RBIs. UTPB had four strikeouts and two walks while leaving six runners on base and committing one error in the field.
UTPB will wrap up its series with St. Edwards with one, nine inning, game starting at noon on Saturday, Feb 20 at Roden Field.

The Falcons continue to roll behind the bat of Evan Gattis. The sophomore catcher had eight runs on six hits with three homeruns and a grandslam, two doubles, 10 RBIs, a stolen base, three walks and a sac fly with no strikeouts and is batting .441 for the season (.500 for the series). Gattis accounted for 15 of UTPB’s 45 runs scored over the weekend. In the field Gattis had five pot outs and no errors.

It was a bitter sweet Valentine’s Day for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin as they split day two of the series with Oklahoma Panhandle State University winning game one 15-8 and dropping game two 13-10.
Game One
UTPB racked up 15 runs on their way to a 15-8 win, Sunday in game one over Panhandle State.
UTPB scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the early lead in the game. Panhandle cut the lead in half with two runs at the top of the third 4-2. However, UTPB answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back up to four at 6-2.
Panhandle pick up another run in the top of the fourth, but UTPB struck back again with two runs of their own to head into the fifth inning up 8-3.
UTPB poured it on in the next two innings with four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to pull ahead 15-3.
Panhandle made a push in the seventh with five runs but it wasn’t enough as UTPB went on to win 15-8.
Chris Hook led all hitters with three hits, two runs and two RBIs with two doubles. Garrett Wolff had two hits with a run and an RBI while Austin Wooldridge had two runs on two hits with two RBIs with a double and a homerun. Although he only had one hit, Evan Gattis put four RBIs on the board with a grand slam homerun and had one stolen base. Gordy LaHann and Miguel Sanchez each had two RBIs with one run, one hit and one double each.
Felix Cardenas picked up his third win of the year going five innings allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Zach Stiles went one and two-thirds in relief allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits with one strikeout and a walk. Daniel Bernal finished the game going a third of an inning with a strikeout.
Combined, UTPB hitters had 15 runs on 14 hits with 15 RBIs, six doubles, a triple, two homeruns, two stolen bases with three walks and one strikeout. The Falcons left six runners on base and committed one error.
Game Two
Panhandle State jumped out to a big lead early, and, although the Falcons rallied back late in game, they came up just short to lose to the Aggies 13-10.
UTPB got on the board first with a run in the first inning, however, OPSU would score 12 run over the next two innings to pull ahead 12-1 over the Falcons. UTPB got a small rally going in the bottom of the third cutting the lead to 12-4. The Aggies picked up a run in the fourth and the Falcons got one in the fifth to make the score 13-5.
The Falcons made their move in the sixth inning putting five runs on the board to get back into the game 13-10.
Unfortunately, UTPB would not score again for the rest of the game as they fall to the Aggies 13-10.
Kevin Enkelmann led all hitters with three hits and two RBIs in the game with two double. Carson Grizzard had two hits and a run; Ryan Giacomini had two hits and a run and Brantley Miller had two hit and a run with two RBIs and two doubles. Gattis had two runs on one hit with three RBIs and a homerun. Chandler Goode would score two runs on one hit.
Falcon hitters as a team had 10 runs on 12 hits with eight RBIs, four doubles and a homerun. UTPB had three walks, two strikeouts and left six runners on base while committing two errors in the field.
Matt Ortiz dropped to 0-1 on the season going two and one-third allowing 10 runs (five earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Jordan Strode went one and a third giving up three runs (two earned) three hits and picking up two strikeouts with two walks. Drew Kendrick threw two and a third in relief allowing no runs on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Chase Lankford finished the game going one inning and picking up two strikeouts.
The Falcons will be at home again next weekend as they host St. Edward’s University on Friday and Saturday Feb. 19-20. UTPB will play two games on Friday and one on Saturday starting at noon on each day.

Slugfest doesn’t really even begin to describe game one of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin’s series against Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Falcons won 14-11, but UTPB and OPSU combined for 33 hits and 25 run in a seven inning game.
Panhandle took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first, but the Falcons batted around in the bottom half to gain a 6-2 advantage over the Aggies.
In the second inning, it was the Aggies turn to put some runs on the board with a five run half inning to go up 7-6. However, the Falcons came through with a run of their own to tie the game at 7-7. Both teams would add a run in the third to keep the game tied 8-8.
In the top of the fourth, Panhandle put two on the board to take the lead 9-7, but the Falcons would answer back, yet again, with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take back the lead 10-9.
The Falcons retired the Aggies 1-2-3 in the fifth and padded their lead with two more runs to increase their advantage to 13-10.
Each team added one run in the sixth, but UTPB closer Chance Lankford, after walking the first batter, retired the next three to pick up a save and a UTPB 14-11 win.
Top hitters for the Falcons were Evan Gattis with two runs on three hits with three RBIs and homerun and two doubles; Austin Wooldridge had three runs on three hits with two doubles; Brantley Miller had three hits with a run and an RBI with two doubles; and Jeremy Miller had two runs on two hits with four RBIs and a home run.

UTPB as a team had 14 runs on 18 hits with 13 RBIs, four strikeouts and six walks. The Falcons had nine doubles, two homeruns, leaving 11 runners on base and committed one error.
OPSU pitchers went six inning allowing 19 hits and 14 runs (10 earned) with six walks and four strikeouts.
Falcon pitchers went seven innings giving up 15 hits, 11 runs (10 earned) while striking out four and walking one.
Game Two
The second game was not as flashy as the first, but featured a solid outing by Mario Urena who threw a complete game, three-hit-shutout to help UTPB pick up a 6-0 game two win.
Offensively, UTPB scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, picked up a run in the third and tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth on their way to a 6-0 victory.
Kevin Enkelmann had four RBIs behind two hits and a run of his own with a double and a triple. Wooldridge had two hits and a run; while Gattis and Chris Wagner each had two runs and a hit.
Urena picked up his first win of the season to improve his record to 1-2. Urena went seven innings allowing three hits and no runs with two strikeouts and no walks.
OPSU pitcher, Swenton Martina, gave up six runs (all earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
As a team OPSU had three hits and two strikeouts with no errors in the field and leaving one runner on base.
The Falcons picked up six runs on six hits with a double and a triple. UTPB hitters had four strikeouts, two walks and left four runners stranded.
The Falcons and Aggies will cross swords again for two games starting at noon on Sunday, Feb. 14.

Hitter of the Week: Evan Gattis, UTPB - C, SO, Forney, TX
In five games, including four against St. Mary’s, Gattis has a .438 batting average with seven hits, five runs, four RBIs, three doubles and a homerun in 16 at bats. Two of those hits and runs came as part of UTPB’s 6-5 come-from-behind win, giving UTPB the 3-1 series win over St. Mary’s in San Antonio.
