Falcons Take Two from St. Mary's in San Antonio

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin Falcons swept the second day of the series with St. Mary’s with a 7-4 win in game one and a 6-5 comeback from behind win in game two.

Game One
After being shutout in game two the day before the Falcon hitters got back on track early against conference foe St. Mary’s.

With junior centerfielder Chandler Goode, who reached on an error by Jonathon Cisneros, and senior outfielder Chris Wagner, who reached on a walk, already on base; the Falcons found themselves with two on and no outs with sophomore DH Evan Gattis coming up to hit.

Gattis ripped a double up the left field line to score Goode from second and moving Wagner to third. The Gattis RBI double put the Falcons up 1-0. Senior first basemen Chris Hook grounded out to second base, but did score Wagner for an RBI to increase the Falcon’s lead to 2-0. Gattis advanced to third on the groundout.

Later in the inning, with junior outfielder Jeremy Miller on first after being hit by a pitch, junior catcher Austin Wooldridge hit a double to right center and picked up two RBIs as Gattis and Miller scored on the play for the Falcons to put UTPB up 4-0. UTPB would end the inning with four runs on two hits with four RBIs and two left on base.

St. Mary’s picked up a run in the bottom half of the first inning after senior infielder Jonathon Cisneros doubled to right center driving in junior outfielder Jason Garcia, who reached on a hard hit single to third base. The Rattlers would wrap up the inning with one run on two hits with one left on base and an RBI.

In the third inning, with two outs, UTPB’s junior third basemen Garrett Wolff and junior shortstop Brantley Miller each reached with singles to the outfield while senior second basemen Gordy LaHann drew a walk to load the bases with two outs and Goode coming up to bat. Goode hit s single to left field to score both B. Miller and Wolff to give the Falcons two more runs and give UTPB a 6-1 lead. UTPB finished the inning with two runs on three hits with two RBIs and two left on base.

St. Mary’s would get back in to the game over the next two innings. The Rattlers added a run in the fourth when junior second basemen Weston Baros reached on a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Sophomore shortstop Esteban Raygoza had an infield hit to the shortstop to score Baros and give St. Mary’s at run to reduce the Falcon lead to 6-2. St. Mary’s would add two more runs in the fifth when junior catcher Ryan Morrow had a two RBI hit through the right side of the infield scoring Baros and Cisneros to cut the UTPB lead down to 6-4.

The Falcons would take one run back when J. Miller hit a soft grounder to third base and beat the throw with the bases load to score LaHann from third base to give the Falcons an insurance run, 7-4.

Sophomore pitcher Chance Lankford came in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh and retired the St. Mary’s hitter in order with a groundout and two strikeouts, sealing the deal and giving the Falcons the 7-4 victory.

Goode finished the day with two hit and a run while picking up two RBIs. Wooldrige also had a big day with two hits and two RBIs. UTPB hitters combined for seven runs on 10 hits with seven RBIs with two errors.

St. Mary’s hitter were lead by Morrow with had a hit with a pair of RBIs in the game. The Rattlers hitters had four runs on seven hits with four RBIs and two errors.

Junior Pitcher Felix Cardenas picked up his second win of the season going four and two thirds while picking up three strikeouts and walk while allowing five hits with four runs (one earned). Senior Jordan Strode came in relief in the fifth and went one and a third giving up no runs on one hit and putting a runner on base via HBP. Lankford picked up his first save of the season going one complete with two strikeouts and no hits. 

Junior pitcher Matt Holland, picked up the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season. Holland went five and a third allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks and one batter hit by pitch. Junior pitcher Grant Harrelson finished the game going one and two thirds with three strikeouts and one walk with no runs allowed.

Game Two
The Rattlers came back strong in the second game of the doubleheader.

St. Mary’s scored a run in the first inning when a Cisneros single scored senior center fielder James Hipp from second base to go up 1-0. St. Mary’s wrapped up the first inning with one run on three hits leaving three runners on base.

In the fifth inning, St. Mary’s struck again when Morrow singled to left center bringing in Cisneros and junior right fielder Jason Garcia to go up 3-0. The Rattlers tacked on another run when Morrow scored on a sac fly from sophomore first basemen Tyler Migl to increase the lead to 4-0. St. Mary’s had three run on two hit while leaving two runners strained.

Each team added a run to the score board in the fourth inning. UTPB scored when junior Ryan Giacomini singled through the right side to drive home Gattis from second base to take a run from St. Mary’s 4-1. St. Mary’s took the run back in the bottom of the fourth when Morrow hit a sac fly to bring in Garcia from third base to go up 5-1.

In the sixth inning the tide turned for the Falcons in a big way. With one out, Gattis doubled down the right field line; Wooldridge drew a walk and Giacomini was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Falcons. Senior outfielder Jack Wortley came in to pinch hit and brought in a run with a sac fly to right field scoring Gattis and cut the lead to 5-2. Freshman third basemen Travis Wilcox drew a walk to load the bases up again for B. Miller. B. Miller drew a five pitch, RBI-walk to move the runners over and score Wooldridge; cutting the St. Mary’s advantage to 5-3 with two outs. Then, LaHann drew a RBI walk to walk in another run as each runner moved over on base and Giacomini scored to bring the Falcons within one at 5-4. Goode ripped a single through the left side of the infield to bring in B. Miller and Wilcox. Goode’s two RBIs put the Falcons on top 6-5. The Falcons scored five runs on only two hits leaving two on base and picking up 5 RBIs.

The UTPB defense held off the Rattlers in the last two innings to pick up the 6-5 win.

Goode had two RBIs on one hit while Gattis finished the game with two hit and two runs.

For the Rattlers, Cisneros had three hits with a run and an RBI, while Morrow had one run on one hit with three RBIs.

Senior pitcher Matt Ortiz started the game for the Falcons. Ortiz went three complete with three strikeouts and four walks while allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits. Sophomore pitcher Casey Rana picked up his first win of the season in a relief appearance. Rana went two complete with three walks and no strikeouts while giving up one run on one hit. Kendrick came in to protect the UTPB lead going on inning for no runs on no hits with no strikeouts or walks. Lankford picked up his second save of the day and of the season with no runs on no hits with no strikeouts and no walks.

St. Mary’s starting pitcher, senior Courtney Behrend, went five and a third with five strikeouts and a walk while giving up four hits and three runs (all earned) with one hit batsmen. Junior Eduardo DeLaChica got the loss to fall to 0-1 for the season in a relief appearance. DeLaChica went a third of an inning allowing three runs (all earned) on no hits with two walks, no strikeouts and one hit batsmen. Junior Sammy Rivas finished up the game for the Rattlers going one and a third with one hit and no runs while allowing one walk and no strikeouts.

Next up for the Falcons will be trip up to Goodwell, OK for a three game series against Oklahoma Panhandle State.

After getting out to a running start in the game one with a 7-0 win over St. Mary’s; the University of Texas of the Permian Basin lost the second half of the double header 3-0 in San Antonio Saturday.

Game one
In a game that looked like it would be a pitcher’s duel through the first three innings ended up being a solid offensive showing for the Falcons.

UTPB got rolling in the fourth inning when singles by senior outfielder Chris Wagner and sophomore catcher Evan Gattis put runners on first and second with no outs. Junior designated hitter Austin Wooldridge put down a sacrifice bunt to move the Wagner and Gattis into scoring position at second and third. Senior first basemen Chris Hook drew a walk to load the bases with one out for junior outfielder Jeremy Miller. Miller ripped a double up the left field line to score Wagner and Gattis while moving Hook over to third base giving UTPB a 2-0 lead. Garrett Wolff hit a deep fly ball to right-center field for a sacrifice fly scoring hook and moving Miller to third with two outs and bumping the score up to 3-0. Junior shortstop Brantley Miller knocked a single up the middle to score Miller and give UTPB a 4-0 advantage. B. Miller put himself in scoring position with a stolen base, but was left stranded after a groundout ended the Falcon rally.

The Falcons continued to roll in the fifth inning. Junior centerfielder Chandler Goode reached after he was hit by a pitch. After a fly out, Gattis cleared the bases with a one out homerun over the left field fence to make the Falcon’s side of the scoreboard two runs heaver at 6-0.

UTPB tacked on one more run when senior second basemen Gordy LaHann scored when the catcher tried to pick him off of third base and over threw the third basemen. LaHann scored on the throwing error to increase the UTPB lead to 7-0.

After hitting the first batter of the inning, starting pitcher Connor Lewis retired the last three hitters of the inning with a fly out to center and two strikeouts on his way to a complete game shutout.

Lewis, had nine strikeouts with no walks giving up four hits with no runs forcing nine fly outs and three ground outs while improving his record to 2-0 on the season.

UTPB hitters were lead by Gattis, who had two hits with a home run, two runs and two RBIs in game one.  J. Miller was right behind him with a run and hit and two RBIs.

As a team UTPB had seven hits and seven runs with six RBIs and no errors.

St. Mary’s hitters had no runs on four hits with a pair of errors in the game. SMU Michael Villarreal drops to 2-0 on the season as he went 4.1 inning giving up six hits and six runs (all earned) with three strikeouts and a walk with one hit batsmen. Carl O’Neal came in to finish the game going 2.2 with one hit and one run (earned) with two strikeouts and a walk.

Game two
The bottom half of the double-header did not fare as well for the Falcons as they fall to St. Mary’s 3-0.

St. Mary’s went quietly in the first two innings before a homerun sparked a rally that left the Falcons trailing 3-0.

UTPB’s hitting went ice cold in game to accounting for no runs on one hit. In fact, Goode broke up St. Mary’s no hitter in the sixth inning with a base hit to center field.

Falcon hitters combined for one hit, no runs with an error.

Starting pitcher senior Mario Urena picked up his second loss of the season to drop to 0-2. Urena went 4 innings giving up three runs (all earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Senior pitcher Drew Kendrick finished up the game going two innings giving up only one hit with no runs while picking up a strikeout.

St. Mary’s hitters had six hits and three runs with three RBIs with one error.

UTPB will play two more games against St. Mary’s starting at noon Sunday, Feb. 7 in San Antonio.

UTPB Racks up 21 Strikeouts in 10-2 Win over A&M International

It was a dominate performance for The University of Texas of the Permian Basin on the last game of the opening series of 2010 as the Falcons outscored the Dustdevils from Texas A&M International 10-2 to win the series 2-1.

UTPB scored early and often in the game, picking up one run in the first, two in the second, one in the third and five in the fifth on the way to their second win of the young season.

Austin Wooldridge led all hitter with three hits on five at bats, three RBIs and one run. Evan Gattis had three runs with a homerun, a hit and a RBI. Chandler Goode had two runs and two stolen bases for the Falcons even though he didn’t have a hit in the game.

Combined, the Falcons put up 10 runs on eight hits with six RBIs and four errors.

TAMIU combined for two runs on five hits with one RBI and five errors.

Felix Cardenas picked up the win for the Falcons with 11 strikeouts, two walks and one hit on five innings pitched. Drew Kendrick picked up six strikeouts and two walks while giving up four hits and two runs (one earned) in two innings of relief. Casey Rana pitched one inning allowing no hits and no runs while accounting for two strikeouts and two walks and Chance Lankford finished up the game for the Falcons with two strikeouts while giving up no hits and no runs. Together, UTPB pitchers gave up five hits and two runs (one earned) and walked six while striking out 21 batters.

TAMIU seven pitchers gave up 10 runs (three earned) on eight hits while getting nine strikeouts and giving up eight walks.

UTPB Baseball will be back in action on Saturday in San Antonio against St. Mary’s University.

Falcon Baseball Splits Opening Day Games with A&M International

After dropping the season opener in Laredo to Texas A&M International 5-3, the Falcons bounced back to run rule the Dustdevils 11-1 in eight innings.

Game One
The Falcons struck first in game one in the third inning. With two outs in the inning Chandler Goode hit a double to left field to bring in Gordy LaHann who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning. Jeremy Miller added a second run to the board with a single to right field to score Goode from second base to give UTPB a 2-0 advantage. UTPB finished the inning with two runs on three hits with two left on base.

The Dustdevils answered back in the home half of the innings with a pair of runs of their own. TAMIU finished the inning with two runs on three hits with an error with none left on base to tie the game at 2-2.

Later in the game, TAMIU added to their lead with another pair of runs with two runs, two hits, an error and two left on base to pull ahead 4-2.

UTPB cut into the lead in the sixth inning when Evan Gattis hit a double down the left field line scoring Miller from third base. UTPB finished the inning with a run, two hits, an error and two left on base.

TAMIU extended the lead with a run on two hits with an error with one left on base.

The Dustdevils held off the Falcons in the seventh to pick up the win 5-3.

For the game, UTPB had three runs on six hits with three errors. TAMIU had five runs on 11 hits with two errors.

UTPB starting pitcher Mario Urena went 4.1 innings with no strikeouts and no walks while giving up nine hits and four runs (one earned) on his way to a loss. Jordan Strode finished the game going 1.2 innings while giving up 1.2 innings with one walk and no strikeouts giving up two hits and an unearned run.

TAMIU pitching combined for six hits, three runs (all earned), four walks and seven strikeouts.

Game Two
UTPB scored first in the third inning when Chris Wagner reached on an error by the center fielder advancing him to third base and scoring Goode who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. UTPB finished the inning with one run on no hits and an error with one left on base and a 1-0 lead.

TAMIU tied up the game 1-1 in the fourth inning with a run off of two hits, no errors and two left on base.

UTPB retook the lead in the sixth inning as Goode lead off the inning with a triple to right field. Goode scored on a Wagner single to left field to put the Falcons up 2-1. UTPB finished the inning with one run on two hits with no errors and one left on base.

The Falcons started to pour it on in the seventh inning. The Falcons scored five runs on five hits with an error and left three on base to extend the lead to 7-1. UTPB stayed hot through the eighth inning as they tacked on four more runs, off of four hits with one error and three left on base to make the score 11-1.

TAMIU was unable to score a run in the eighth inning giving UTPB the 11-1 run rule win.

UTPB scored 11 runs on 11 hits with no errors in the shorten game. TAMIU scored one run on eight hits with three runs.

Connor Lewis picked up the win going five innings with three strikeouts and a walk while giving up six hits and one earned run. Matt Ortiz pitched the last two inning allowing two hit and no runs with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Dustdevil pitching combined for five strikeouts, six walks while giving up 11 runs (eight earned) off of 11 hits.

UTPB will wrap up the opening series in Laredo at noon on Tuesday with one nine inning game.
 

UTPB Baseball Picked to Win the Heartland Conference

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team has been picked to repeat as the Heartland Conference Champions in 2010 in the preseason poll. UTPB won the 2009 Conference Championship on the last game of the season giving UTPB its first baseball title. The Falcons grabbed the top spot with 111 points, just one point in front of St. Mary’s University with 110.

Here is how the rest of the conference was picked to finish.
