UTPB 8 St. Edward’s 7 (14)
April 8, 2010
AUSTIN – After 23 hits, five errors, 32 runners left on base and 14 innings the championship bracket game between The University of Texas of the Permian Basin and St. Edward’s University was decided on a bases loaded passed ball that scored Gordy LaHann from third base to put UTPB on top 8-7.
UTPB drew first blood in the second inning when a Brantley Miller double knocked in three runs to put the Falcons on top 3-0. St. Edward’s answered back in the bottom of the set with a pair of runs to cut the lead to one run at 3-2.
The Falcons got rolling again in the third inning. Wagner reached on a triple and scored on an Evan Gattis single to go up 4-2. Later in the inning, a Kevin Enkelmann single scored Gattis from second to give UTPB a 5-2 advantage.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth and UTPB added another run in the top of the sixth to run out to a 7-3 lead.
However, St. Edward’s was not finished. A big rally by the Hilltoppers in the bottom of the sixth locked the game up at 7-7.
Over the next nine innings, each team left eight runners on base. UTPB pitcher Chace Lankford allowed only one hit in his seven innings pitched to leave the St. Edward’s runners stranded and UTPB alive.
In the top of the fourth inning, UTPB walked the first two batters to give the Falcons runners on first and second with no outs. Chris Wagner put a bunt down to try to advance the runner, but ended up beating out the play to reach first to load the bases with no out and Gattis coming to the plate. However, a passed ball during Gattis’ at bat allowed LaHann to score giving UTPB the lead 8-7.
After two outs, a single and a walk put two runners on for the Hilltoppers. However, Lankford struck out the final batter to lock up an 8-7 victory and a spot in the conference championship game at 1 pm on Sunday.
UTPB 8 Incarnate Word 4
May 7, 2007
AUSTIN – A combination of timely hitting and solid pitching boosted The University of Texas of the Permian Basin to an opening round 8-4 win in the Heartland Conference Tournament over the University of the Incarnate Word Friday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
UTPB hitters wasted little time getting on the board as an Evan Gattis single scored Chris Wagner from second base in the first inning. In the second inning, another Gattis single scored two runs leaving Gattis on second and Wagner on third base. Then, Gattis drew a throw to second base on a steal to set up the double steal as Wagner stole home to give the Falcons a commanding 4-0 lead after the second inning.
After that flash of offensive in the first two innings both pitchers took over the game. UTPB starter, Felix Cardenas, gave up his first hit and run of the game on a triple in the fourth inning. However, in the second through the seventh innings Cardenas would only face one batter over the minimum. Word got a small rally going in the eighth inning and would score one more run on a dropped fly ball.
With the win, Cardenas improved to 11-2 on the season going eight complete with 12 strikeouts, two walks while only allowing two hits and one earned run (two total runs). Cardenas’ 12 strikeouts put him over 100 for the season.
Incarnate Word pitching also got rolling. In fact, the Cardinals cooled off the Falcon’s bats until the ninth inning. After a lead-off walk, UTPB, up 4-2, tried to bunt the runner over to scoring position. Shortstop Brantley Miller put down a bunt right back to the pitcher and beat the throw to put runners on first and second with no outs. The next batter Gordy LaHann, also tried to lay down a bunt. Again the bunt went right to the pitcher and again the batter would beat the throw to first base. With bases load and no outs, lead-off hitter Chandler Goode ripped a double to the gap to empty the bases before getting thrown out trying to advance to third base. A solo homerun by Wagner would bump the score up to 8-2.
Incarnate Word put a string of hits together in the ninth, but the Falcons would fight off the Cardinal run to advance to the winner’s bracket game to face St. Edward’s at 3 pm Saturday with a 8-4 win.
St. Edward’s made to the winners bracket game by defeating St. Mary’s 10-3 in the first game of the day. Incarnate Word and St. Mary’s will play at 11 am Saturday Morning in an elimination game.
The winner of the UTPB vs. St. Edward’s game will advance to the championship game on Sunday at 1 pm.
The winner of St. Mary’s vs. Incarnate Word game will face the loser of the UTPB vs. St. Edward’s game Saturday night at 7 pm.

Game One
UTPB had a small 3-2 lead until the Falcons nailed down a big inning in the fifth, scoring five runs to take the 7-2 advantage. Newman scored two in the top of the sixth, but the Falcons would match it in the bottom of the frame and went on to win 9-4.

Game Two
The second game of the day got a little too exciting at the end for the Falcon faithful as Newman cut the lead to one before the Falcons could put the Jets away for good and win game two 7-6.
After each team scored three runs in the first inning, UTPB pulled ahead with three runs in the second to go up 6-3. After the Jets scored one in the fourth the Falcons picked up an insurance run in the six and they would need it as a Newman rally cut the UTPB advantage to only one in the top of the seventh. However, UTPB was able to hang on and win game final game of the afternoon 7-6.

The win gave UTPB the 2-1 series win to mark the first time the Falcons have won a series at UIW in school history.
After both teams scored three runs in the in the third to make the score 3-3, the Falcons loaded the bases thanks to Word walking one hitter and hitting two. Word walked in a run with bases loaded. The final run in the inning was scored on a wild pitch to put UTPB up 6-3.
