Cheerleader/Dance/Mascot
General Information
Purpose of Cheerleading Squad, Dance Team and Mascots
The Cheerleading, dance squads and mascots will serve the University to promote spirit on the UTPB campus and University awareness throughout the Permian Basin.
Scholarships
Scholarships will be given for our cheerleaders, dancers and mascots. Scholarship awards vary in amount and are awarded on a semester by semester basis. Spirit scholarships cannot be combined with other UTPB awards.
In order for an individual to receive a spirit scholarship, she/he must tryout for a position on one of the squads, be offered a scholarship and be admitted to UTPB under regular admissions criteria.
Returning UTPB students must have an overall institutional GPA of 2.25 or higher.
Participants not living at home with parents, immediate relative or spouse must live on-campus if a scholarship is awarded.
Behavioral Expectations
Behavioral requirements equal or greater to those expected for athletic competition must be adhered to.
Practices
Practice will begin in the second week of August and will be held daily. Volleyball matches are likely to be held the last weekend in August. Practice times during the academic year will be scheduled as are sports team practices and participants must schedule around the practice period as do athletes. Squad members are expected to participate in all practices. The sponsor for each squad should be consulted for practice times.
Credit for Participation
Participants will receive credit for their participation in the program. A ½ credit course has been created for the dance team and the cheerleaders in the fall and spring course schedule. Participants must enroll in the course each semester that they participate.
Required Activity for Cheer Leaders/Dance Team and Mascots
Attendance at all practices and official events is required. In addition to practices noted above, participation in the following activities at minimum is required:
- Community service events throughout the academic year – 9 total
- Examples: Permian Basin Fair, Easter Seals Telethon, etc.
- Public school performances
- A minimum of 2 performances in February, March & April – 6 total
- +/-15 basketball dates - Create posters for the events
- +/- 12 volleyball dates - Create posters for events
- All Playoff performances if playoffs are hosted
Academic Eligibility
Spirit squad members must meet the same academic requirements as athletes in order to compete from year to year. As a general rule: pass 12 credits or more per semester with a 2.0 GPA.
Mascot Affiliation
The mascot will train with the Cheer Squad and will be expected to make appearances when possible as requested.
