Athletic Training
With the transition of UTPB intercollegiate athletics into NCAA Division II status, many changes have taken place within the Department of Athletics and Athletic Training. In addition to newly renovated facilities and the purchase of new equipment, UTPB has hired its first full-time Head Athletic Trainer. Along with the continued growth of the university, the athletic training staff and athletic training program are expecting grow as well in the upcoming years.
UTPB student athletes can expect to receive first class medical care while participating in intercollegiate athletics here at UTPB. Along with the dedicated athletic training staff and athletic training students in the program, student athletes have a number of medical professionals in the Odessa community committed to their welfare and success. UTPB look for assistance from their team physicians at Basin Orthopedic Surgical Specialists (BOSS) and the sports medicine experts at PhyTEX whenever it is deemed necessary. The sports medicine team at UTPB consists of many highly qualified and experienced professionals.
Visiting teams at UTPB can expect full use of the athletic training facilities and equipment during their visit. Taping stations and treatment tables are available along with a number of therapeutic modalities (moist heat packs, ice, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and whirlpools). The training room will be open two hours prior to all athletic competitions. If a visiting team does not have a certified/licensed athletic trainer with them, UTPB asks that prior notification of any needed treatments/taping be sent in the form of an e-mail or letter. During competitions, visiting teams will be supplied with water, cups/water bottles, treatment ice and bags, and bench towels. Vacuum splints, AED, and other first-aid supplies will also be available when needed.
Prospective students interested in pursuing a career in athletic training should give consideration to the academic program offered at UTPB. Currently, UTPB offers a BS degree in Kinesiology with an Athletic Training Specialization. Along with their general education requirements, students will take a variety of athletic training courses. Athletic training students will also receive hands on athletic training experience in a variety of settings in order to prepare them for entry level athletic training positions within the state of Texas. Successful completion of the current course of study will allow students to meet all requirements set forth by the Texas Department of Health Services to qualify for the Texas Licensing Exam.
The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin blends both clinical and classroom components to develop a well-rounded entry-level certified athletic trainer (ATC). The University of Texas of the Permian Basin ATEP is a growing program seeking Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accreditation. The Bachelor of Science major develops the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes/behaviors necessary for the practice of athletic training. The academic and clinical instructors continually strive to provide the students with the most current evidence-based clinical and teaching practices by attending seminars and conferences, and through conducting original research.
