Lady Falcons Stumble Against SE Oklahoma State
Nov. 20, 2009
The UTPB women’s basketball team, playing in their third game this week, fell to SE Oklahoma State, 68-49 on Friday evening. The Lady Falcons are participating in the St. Mary’s Classic in San Antonio.
UTPB scored the game’s opening basket and led 4-3 until Elizabeth Dean converted a lay-up for SE Oklahoma State at the 13:10 mark to give the Storm the lead for good. Dean’s basket began an 11-0 spurt for the Storm that would see the Lady Falcons go scoreless for more than four minutes. Later, a three-point basket by Dean would extend the Storm lead to its largest of the opening half, a 17-point margin at 27-10 with just more than five minutes to play in the opening half.
The Lady Falcons would then use an 11-2 spurt to trim their deficit to eight points at 29-21 with two minutes left before intermission. SE Oklahoma State would score the final four points of the half to take a 33-21 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Falcons would get a close as 10 on two occasions but could never get the game down to single digits. The Lady Falcons would endure another six and half minute dry spell midway through the half that would make any type of comeback impossible. The Storm would push the lead to as many as 22 before settling for the 68-49 victory.
As a team, the Lady Falcons converted just 34% of their shots, including a 15% performance from three-point land. On the flip side, the Storm converted 46% of their shot attempts, as well as an impressive 20 of 20 performance from the free throw line. UTPB was outrebounded 35-28 and committed 28 turnovers in the contest.
Individually, Tammy Acosta was the lone Lady Falcon to reach double figures as she tallied 12 points. Pasha Cornish was next for UTPB with eight points in just nine minutes of play.
The Lady Falcons will return to action tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, November 21, 2009) when they battle Northeastern Oklahoma University. Game time is set for 2:00pm.

The Lady Falcons, playing in their home opener, never trailed in the contest. The win evens up their record on the season at 1-1. Sul Ross State falls to 0-1 on the season.
After scoring the game’s first 13 points, the Lady Falcons led 15-2 at the first media timeout. They would stretch their lead to 23-5 midway through the opening stanza before settling for a halftime lead of 31-15.
The second half was more of the same as the Lady Falcons remained in complete control. UTPB scored the first five of the second half to push their lead to 21 at 36-15. They would lead by as many as 26 points on two separate occasions before settling on the 23-point victory.
As a team, UTPB converted 49% of their field goal attempts while holding the Lady Lobos to just 34% shooting. The Lady Falcons also outrebounded the visitors 34-30 and forced 29 turnovers in the contest.
Individually, 11 Lady Falcons dented the scoring column, three of which tallied double figures. Miesha Blackshear and Lauren Unger each collected 12 points in the contest. Dominique Haywood added 10 markers. Blackshear also led the team in rebounding with six.
UTPB’s Lady Falcons will next play on Friday and Saturday, November 20-21, 2009 when they travel to San Antonio to participate in the St. Mary’s Classic. Friday’s contest will pit the Lady Falcons opposite of Southeastern Oklahoma University. Game time is set for 5:00pm.
Falcons Fall On Road To Angelo State, 48-40
Nov. 17, 2009
The UTPB men’s basketball team fell on the road to Angelo State Tuesday evening in a defensive battle, 48-40. The contest served as the season opener for both teams. The Falcons now stand at 0-1 overall.
The Falcons jumped out to a 6-2 early lead three minutes into the contest. Angelo State’s Rams responded with a 14-3 run over the next eight minutes to take a 16-9 lead, their largest of the opening half. The Falcons would return the favor as they bounced back with a 14-3 run of their own over the final 8:33 of the first half. The spurt gave the Falcons a 23-19 lead at intermission.
A slow start to the second half hurt the Falcons early as multiple turnovers led to only four points in the opening eight minutes. In that time, the Rams would build their lead to as many as six points at 33-27 with 12:33 to play. The Falcons would then use stifling defense to make a 4-0 run over the next 6:33 to cut their deficit to two points at 33-31 with six minutes to play. The Rams were held scoreless for nearly seven minutes in the stretch.
From the six minute mark on, the Rams very slowly and methodically stretched their lead to four points at the three-minute mark, and up to as many as 10 points at 46-36 with 51 seconds to play. The 10-point lead would be the first double digit lead of the game for either team and Angelo State would eventually settle for a 48-40 victory over the Falcons.
As a team, the Falcons defense was more than good enough as they held the Rams to just 29% shooting in the contest, including only 17% from the three-point line. However, the Falcons converted just 35% of their field goal attempts and were outrebounded 41-29. UTPB also committed 23 turnovers in the contest. Additionally, the Falcons attempted only 16 free throws, in comparison to 30 by the home-standing Rams. Four Falcons fouled out of the contest, while no Rams fouled out.
Sophomore Elijah Jordan led UTPB in scoring with 11 points on four of nine shooting. He was the lone double-digit scorer in the contest. Senior Charles Harper led the way in rebounding with seven overall.
The Falcons will next play on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 when they travel to face the University of Texas – Arlington, a member of NCAA I. Game time is set for 7:00pm.

UTPB lost the first half 39-14 and the second half 25-24.
The Falcons came out and scored the first three points of the game on a three pointer by junior Andrea Chavez from junior Miesha Blackshear. The Texanns never looked back as they cruised into the half building a 39-14 lead. UTPB played even with Tarleton in the second half 25-24, but could never overcome the first half lead as the Falcons fall to the Texanns 64-38.

Falcon’s Volleyball Season Ends in Austin 3-1
Nov. 13, 2009
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin Volleyball's season comes to a close after falling to the St. Edward's Hilltoppers in the first round of the Heartland Conference Tournament 3-1 in Austin.
UTPB lost 23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-17.
After scoring the first two points of the first set, the Hilltoppers from St. Edward’s began to build up a lead over the Falcons 18-13. The Falcons scored four unanswered points to pull with in one point at 18-17, but didn’t catch St. Edward’s until UTPB tied the set 22-22. The Falcons went on to reach set point and, although the ’Toppers did fight off set point once, put down the last point to rally back to take the early lead in the match 1-0.
The second set was almost a carbon copy of the first set. UTPB jumped out to an early lead and looked like they were going to fight off the ’Toppers before St. Edward’s found their way back in the set 13-13. This time, however, the Falcons could not catch the Hilltoppers as St. Edward’s went on to win the second set 25-23 to even the match 1-1.
Unfortunately for the Falcons faithful, St. Edward’s momentum from the second set carried the Hilltoppers to a 25-15 win in set three and 25-17 win in set four to pick up the 3-1 win.
UTPB finishes the season 16-20.
Senior setter Brianna Tunnell had a career day for the Falcons with 29 set assists, 27 digs, seven kills and a solo block. As a team the Falcons pick up 106 digs with five women in double digits and two with 20 plus digs.

“The ladies had a strong second half of the meet to come from behind and win the meet. The seniors really stepped up and placed well in some key races. The ladies were behind for the meet until the last three events.”
“With some strong finishes in the final races we were able to win with a narrow victory. Freshmen Rachel Duhon, senior Allie Lape, and senior Cassandra Wilcox won key races that put us ahead. With the final relay winning, that secured our victory.”
The Falcon’s placed second with a time of 2:03.62. Katie Welch lead the relay off swimming backstroke, Stephanie Ferguson went second swimming breastroke, Elora McCullough swam third leg of butterfly, and Julie Walter anchored the relay with freestyle.

Lady Falcons Fall To Wayland Baptist in Final Preseason Tune-Up
Nov. 9, 2009
The UTPB women’s basketball team, playing in their final preseason exhibition game, fell at home to Wayland Baptist University, 65-52.
Both teams struggled to get it going early offensively as the score was knotted up at 4-4 with 14:55 to play in the opening half. Wayland Baptist would make the first big run of the contest, using a 14-0 run over the next 5:58 to take a commanding 18-4 lead with nine minutes to play. The Lady Falcons would begin chipping away at the deficit as they closed the half on a 14-3 run to trail just 21-18.
A 4-0 spurt by UTPB in the opening minutes of the second half gave the Lady Falcons a 22-21 lead. The teams would exchange leads four times over the next couple minutes. The final lead for the Lady Falcons would come at the 13:50 mark when Callie Norris converted a three-point shot to give the host a 31-30 lead. Just 15 seconds later, the Lady Queens would get a lay-up from Megan Coats to give the visitors a 32-31 lead. They would never trail again.

As a team, UTPB converted just 38% of their shot attempts, while the Lady Queens made43% of their attempts. The Lady Falcons also struggled from the free throw line as they converted just 29% (four of 14). In addition, UTPB was outrebounded 44-34 and committed 25 turnovers in the contest.

UTPB Volleyball grabs a spot in the Heartland Conference Play-Offs
Nov. 5, 2009
As UTPB was wrapping up its 3-0 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State just after 8 pm Thursday night the issue was still not settled.
Dallas Baptist was down 2-1 to Newman in Dallas. A Newman win and UTPB would be in a must win situation on Saturday against Newman Jets. A Dallas Baptist win and the Falcons would lock up at least fourth place and go back the Heartland Conference Tournament.
The Dallas Baptist Patriots rallied back and won two sets in row to knock Newman out of the race and hand UTPB the final ticket to the big show.
Despite, losing to Incarnate Word 3-2, St. Edward’s clinched, at least part of, the regular season title and the right to host the conference tournament. (Even if St. Edward’s and Incarnate Word finish the season tied, since the match went to five sets St. Edward’s would win the tie breaker).
So the current sitting for the tournament is as follows:
1. St. Edward’s
2. Incarnate Word
3. Dallas Baptist
4. UTPB
However, a scenario does exist in which UTPB can jump up one more playoff spot. If the Falcons defeat Newman on Saturday, Nov. 7 and Dallas Baptist loses to Oklahoma Panhandle State then UTPB and DBU would be tied and the tie breaker would go to the Falcons. (UTPB out scored DBU by one point in the Falcons 3-1 win over the Patriots).
In either case, the first round of the tournament will be Friday, Nov. 13 in Austin. The matches will be fourth seed vs. first seed and third seed vs. second seed (times are TBD).
The winners from each match will play Saturday, Nov. 14 for the right to represent the Heartland Conference at the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Finally at the 70:12 mark, Allyson Bales scored what would be the game winner. As the game would have it, Bales scored on a free kick – from 40 yards out. UTPB could not find the nets the rest of the way and the Lady Falcons fell, 1-0.
Women’s Soccer Defeats Newman, 3-0
Nov. 3, 2009
The UTPB women’s soccer team extended their win streak to three consecutive games by defeating Newman University, 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon . The win moves the Lady Falcons to 6-11-1 overall and 3-7-1 in Heartland Conference play. Newman falls to 8-7-4 overall and 6-4-2 in conference action.
Hannah Dozier got the Lady Falcons on the board at the 35:05 mark when she scored from 10 yards out on a breakaway. UTPB would use Dozier’s goal to take a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Dozier scored her second goal at the 54:21 mark when she intercepted an errant pass from a Newman player to the goalie. Dozier knocked it in from close range to give the Lady Falcons a 2-0 lead. Finally, with just under ten minutes to play, Dozier crossed a pass to Brittany Booth, who found the back of the net to provide the final margin of 3-0.
The shutout victory for the Lady Falcons is their second in their last three outings. Over the last three contests, the Lady Falcons have outscored their opponents, 8-1.

Joeski Williams scored from straight on at about 10 yards out to put the Hilltoppers up 1-0 just under five minutes into the final stanza. Then, at the 62:36 mark of the contest, the Hilltoppers would add to their lead when Josh Nannen scored on a penalty kick. That would provide the final margin of 2-0 for the host.
Statistically, the Falcons were dominated in shot attempts as St. Edwards posted 20 tries to just five for St. Edwards. UTPB did not have one shot attempt in the entire second half. Additionally, the Falcons were tagged with four yellow cards and a red card in the contest.
UTPB will play host to Newman University on Sunday, November 8, 2009. The game, which is scheduled for 3:00pm, will be the final men’s soccer game of the 2009 season.
Falcons bounce back; pick up a huge 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist
Oct. 31, 2009
With the Heartland Conference Playoffs on the line, the Falcons got a much needed 3-1 win in the team’s second match against Dallas Baptist.
UTPB won 20-25, 25-21, 25-14, 27-25.
It did not look good in the first set of the match for the Falcons as they found themselves down early to the Patriots 10-3. However, the Falcons clawed their way back in and finally caught DBU at 16-16. Both teams stayed even through the 19-19 mark when Dallas Baptist retook the lead and never let it go. The Patriots took the first set 25-20.
Dallas Baptist and UTPB found themselves deadlocked through most of the second set. The score was tied at 15-15 when UTPB took a small lead and held off the Patriots to win the second set 25-21 and even up the match at 1-1.
Still riding the set two momentum, UTPB ran out to a 15-7 lead over Dallas Baptist and cruised to a 25-14 win to take the 2-1 advantage in the match.
Dallas Baptist came out firing away at UTPB in the fourth set. DBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead to force a UTPB timeout and then, extended their advantage to 10-6, leading UTPB to use both of its timeouts early in the set. The Falcons were not done. UTPB chased down and caught the Patriots at the 14-14 mark. The set stayed close through the 23-23 mark when DBU took the advantage to set up set point. UTPB fought off set point to tie the set at 24-24 before an attacking error brought the Falcons to set point. The Patriots put down a kill to even the set back up at 25-25. However, after DBU served the ball into the net to give The Falcons match point. UTPB put down a double block to win the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.

UTPB has two matches left in the regular season and both of them are important as UTPB is in a fight for the last playoff spot with Newman, a team who beat UTPB the first time the teams played 3-2.
First the Falcons will face Oklahoma Panhandle State at 7 pm on Thursday, Nov. 5. Then UTPB will face Newman at 2 pm on Saturday, Nov. 7. Both games will be live and in living color in The Falcon Dome.
